Tools for Building Form Templates
Group Complete uses the XForms standard to define form templates and store collected data. Because XForms is a standard there are several different tools that you can choose from when it comes to building form templates. Below is a list of tools that are compatible with Group Complete.
We do not host any of the following form building tools & services and will not be responsible for any data that is lost as a result of using them, loss of availability or other problems. Please keep backups of your form templates.
With the exception of Purcforms, we will provide help and assistance for these tools to users of our premium plans. Send us your questions, comments or problems and we'll do our very best to address them for you.
ODK Build: User friendly form building for the web
Open Data Kit's Build is a form designer with a drag-and-drop user interface that is very similar to the built-in form editor found in Group Complete Mobile. ODK Build is an HTML5 web application and works best for designing simple forms.
Using ODK Build
Go to http://build.opendatakit.org and sign in.
Add a new prompt, by dragging the elements from the bottom of the screen onto the blank canvas. For each prompt, modify its properties on the right portion of the screen. Prompts can also be rearranged through drag and drop.
When the form is finished, go to the File menu, Save and then Export to XML. When the Export dialog appears, select Download and save the XML file to your desktop.
Copy the XML file from your desktop to the top-level of your mobile device's SD card by using the USB adapter for your mobile device or by inserting your mobile device's SD card into your computer.
Once you have stopped USB sharing or re-inserted the SD card into your mobile device, restart your mobile device and start GC Mobile. Open the Group Complete folder that you wish to import the form into and select Add Template from the options menu in the form browser and Import from the Add Template dialog.
Using GC Mobile's file browser, navigate to the location on the SD card where you placed the XML file, select it and choose Continue. This should import your new XForm into the Group Complete folder that you opened.
Purcforms: Advanced web-based form building & runtime
Purcforms is an advanced web based form designer and form runtime engine. Although it is very flexible it is considerably more difficult to use than Group Complete Mobile's built-in form editor and other third-party form builders. Because of this we recommend it only to people who are willing to spend time and effort to learn how it works.
KoBoForm: Advanced web-based form building
KoBoForm Designer is an advanced web based form designer based on Purcforms. It is somewhat less flexible than Purcforms but also significantly easier to use. If you need a web based form designer more powerful than Build we suggest trying KoBoForm before attempting to use Purcforms.
XLS2XForm: Use simple spreadsheets to define forms
XLS2XForm is a tool to simplify the creation of forms. Forms can be designed with Excel and XLS2XForm will convert it to a XForm that can be imported into Group Complete.
You can build your spreadsheet by following the tutorial or start with the sample Excel file.
